Q What should I look for?
A ■ Only products conforming to EN 12413 and marked as such should be used
■ Reinforced resinoid wheels not bearing EN 12413 may not conform the highest safety standards
■ Before selecting the wheels, ensure that the expiry date has not been exceeded
■ All wheels should be examined carefully for damage or defects before fitting on the machine.

Q How should I fit the cutting wheel on the machine?
A ■ Follow carefully the instructions given in the machine handbook.
■ Never fit a wheel which is loose or too tight on the flange.
■ Align the outer flange correctly as shown in the FEPA Safety leaflets for cutting and cutting discs for angle grinders
■ Tighten only with the tool supplied with the machine.
■ Ensure the wheel is properly gripped to prevent slippage, but do not tighten with excessive force. Never use a hammer.
■ Keep flanges and screw threads clean and free of burrs and rust.
■ Replace distorted or damaged flanges before fitting the wheel.
■ Run all wheels after fitting for at least 30 seconds at operating speed keeping behind the guard in case the wheel breaks.

Q How should I handle and store the wheels?
A ■ All abrasives wheels are fragile. They should be handled with care.
■ Wheel should be stored on a flat, rigid surface, avoiding damp and frost or wide variation in temperature.
■ Use the oldest wheels (on “first in, first out” basis)

Q How should I protect myself?
A Eye protection
Ear protection (ear sets)
Hand protection (gloves)
Lung protection (dust mask, also called respirator)
■ Never remove the protective machine guard and make sure it is properly adjusted to deflect debris away from you.
■ Ensure that no other person is at risk, especially near the machine while working.

Q How should I handle the cutting wheel after use?
A ■ Before storing the machine or transporting it to another location, always remove the wheel and store it as recommended.
■ Always carefully examine the wheel for damage or defects, and destroy and discard if damaged.
■ Do not fit worn out wheels on a smaller machine. Destroy them.
■ If the wheel does not bear a legible expiry date, or has exceeded this date, dispose it as recommended below.
■ When disposing of worn out or defective wheels, it is recommended to damage them to prevent someone from removing them from waste and re-using them.

Q What is flap wheel used for?
A Choose a flap wheel when you're working with metal and need to work on the inside of the structure, such as inside a pipe or tube. Flap wheels can also provide different finishes depending on the amount of pressure you use, and can be useful for fine metal finishing, blurring edges, and plating finishing.

Q What are flap discs used for on a grinder?
A A flap disc is an abrasive product designed for right-angle grinder applications that consists of overlapping abrasive “flaps” glued radially to a backing plate. Flap discs became popular for benefits like fast stock removal and the ability to perform grinding, blending, and finishing in one product.

Q What grit flap disc is best for sharpening mower blades?
A We recommend a 36 or 40 grit flap disc or a hard disc. Either straight or beveled wheels work equally well. Type 29 or 27 flap discs will work equally.

Q Who uses flap discs?
A Flap discs are used to conform and shape metal. They have densely layered abrasive cloth flaps that can shape certain metals while leaving a finished look. They are most commonly used in welding, machining, heavy-duty equipment, industrial maintenance, agriculture and food production.

Q What is the difference between a Type 27 and 29 flap disc?
A Type 27 is used for grinding the plane and outside corners. In the bucket program we see lots of Type 27 discs used only on the edges so the recommendation is to switch to a Type 29 disc. A Type 29 flap disc is referred to as a curved disc. It is best used at a 15-25 degree angle.

Q Do flap discs expire?
A It is recommended that coated abrasive belts and discs be consumed within 10 years from the date of manufacture. This recommendation assumes that coated abrasive products have been stored under ideal conditions.

Q Can you sharpen mower blades with a flap disc?
A I use this flap disc to sharpen mower blades. It is more user friendly than a grinding disc and removes less material so you can sharpen blades easily and frequently.

Q Can you use a flap disc on aluminum?
A It turns out, flap discs are possibly the best grinding discs for aluminum. By design, flap disks grind metal surfaces at much lower temperatures than other abrasive discs.
