1. Cutting disc

A cutting disc is the best tool for an angle grinder if your goal is to cut metal. Cutting discs are consumable tools used on angle grinders, they can be used to cut steel, stainless steel, aluminum and other metal alloys. Generally, cutting discs are made of fiberglass, organic resins, and abrasive materials. All the components used in the manufacture of cutting discs and how they are manufactured affect the cut rate and their lifespan. Cutting discs with alumina and zirconia grains are the most popular as they provide toughness and good steel cutting properties. Cutting discs are available in different thicknesses, and the type of cutting wheel you choose depends on the type, shape and thickness of steel you need to cut.

2. Flap discs

Flap discs are often the best abrasive wheels for quick deburring, and deburring welds and can provide grinding, blending and finishing in one product. Flap discs made with the (blue/green) zirconia material work well on mild steel and stainless steel, in contrast to other flap discs that use the significantly less effective (brown/red) alumina abrasive material. The latter is also not suitable for working on stainless steel. These zirconia flap discs are designed to allow the abrasive grains to cut efficiently for as long as possible, then release cleanly to open up the freshly cut grains on the flap below, providing a more consistent finish and an even cut rate.

3. Grinding disc

Grinding discs are suitable for all weld grinding, pipe grooving, beveling and general heavy-duty stock removal on mild steel. These grinding discs with an alumina bond work best on mild steel or softer metals, but will not work on stainless steel. Alumina is the most commonly used abrasive in grinding discs, which are typically used for grinding carbon steel, alloy steel, high-speed steel, annealed malleable iron, wrought iron, and bronze and similar metals.
