1. Determine the suitable wheel material for the job.
Aluminum oxide grinding wheels are suitable for ferrous metals and high tensile strength alloys. Zirconia grinding wheels are used in high torque grinders and heavy cutting, ferrous metals and high tensile strength alloys. Silicon carbide grinding wheels are suitable for non-ferrous metals (such as copper, aluminum, bronze) and materials with low tensile strength (such as cast iron, ductile iron).

Always verify that the grinder does not exceed the RPM marked on the wheel. Do not run an oversized wheel on the grinder with the guard removed. It is dangerous to use a grinder without proper guards at any time.
